A soft-shell roof bag is one of the cheapest ways to add real storage to a car, but the range can look confusing when every listing claims to be "the best." This guide covers the things that actually matter — capacity, roof rack compatibility, waterproofing and straps — so you can pick the right size for your trip instead of guessing.

How much capacity do you actually need?

Our range runs from 14 cubic feet (around 400 litres) up to 21 cubic feet (around 600 litres). As a rough guide, 14–15 cu ft suits a couple travelling light or topping up an already-full boot; 19–21 cu ft suits a family of four to six packing for a week away, camping gear included. Buying slightly larger than you think you need costs little extra and means you are not repacking the boot at 6am to make things fit.

Do you need a roof rack?

Check the "roof rack required" spec on each product page before you buy. Several bags in our range use door hooks and straps that clip onto the car body directly, so no rails or crossbars are needed. Others are designed to strap onto existing roof rails, crossbars or a roof basket, and will not sit securely on a bare roof. Buying the wrong type for your car is the single most common roof bag mistake.

Waterproofing that actually holds up

Look past the word "waterproof" on its own and check what the bag is actually made from. Heavier PVC-coated fabrics (800D–1000D) and Oxford fabric with a PVC lining hold up better to sustained motorway rain than thinner fabrics. A covered, sealed zip with a wide protective flap is just as important as the fabric itself — most leaks happen at the zip, not through the material.

Straps, hooks and stability at speed

More straps generally means a more secure fit, particularly on longer motorway drives. Reinforced buckles and an anti-slip mat (where included) stop the bag shifting and protect your paintwork from rubbing. Always check your vehicle's roof load limit in the owner's manual before loading up — the bag's own weight limit is one number, but your car's roof load rating is the one that matters.

Soft bag vs hard roof box

A hard-shell roof box is more aerodynamic and offers a bit more security, but costs several times more and needs permanent storage space, typically a garage, when not in use. A soft roof bag folds flat into its own storage pouch, fits in a cupboard or car boot between trips, and covers the vast majority of family road trips, camping runs and airport transfers at a fraction of the price.

Care and storage

Wipe the bag clean with a damp cloth after use, particularly if it has been near sand, salt spray or mud, and let it dry fully before folding it away. Keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight when stored, which is the main thing that shortens the fabric's lifespan over several seasons of use.
